THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN JEJU ~
Ria Kim
Jeju is a great place to live and was designated by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site in 2007. It is not the Hawaii of Asia, nor is it a sub-tropical island. But it is very pretty and there are many things to do. I am not even going to try and list all of the sites and museums that the island offers because there are simply too many.
There are many activities to do here: swimming, hiking, sailing, scuba diving, hang gliding, paintballing, horse riding, Go Kart racing, ice skating and a lot more.
What follows are the sites and museums that I personally think are especially worth seeing.
Seongsan Ilchubong (Sunrise Peak)

Formed from beneath the sea by a volcanic eruption over 100,000 years ago, it is located on the eastern side of Jeju Do. On the New Year, there is a festival where people from far and wide gather to see the first sunrise of the year.
Manjang-gul (Lava Caves)

As one of the longest lava tunnels in the world, this really is an impressive site and a must see. It is located on the eastern side of Jeju Do.
Sanbangsan Temple

It is located on the southwest side of Jeju Do. The beautiful lava dome, 395m above sea level and about 800,000 years old, houses an impressive temple and Buddhist statue.
Yongmeori Coast

Located next to Sangbangsan on the southwest coast, these amazing rock formations built up over millions of years. It is also a great place to eat seafood fresh from the ocean
Cheonjiyeon Waterfalls

The magnificent scenery is best viewed from the arch-shaped Seonim Bridge pictured here.
Halla Mountain

It is located in the centre of Jeju-do and is 1,950 meters high.
There are five hiking trails on the mountain but only two lead to the top.

Gwaneumsa trail (8.7km):
Good beginner trail that leads to the top

Seongpanak trail (9.6km):
More difficult to climb, especially in the winter
It is advised for first time hikers to go up the Gwaneumsa trail and come down Seongpanak.
Please make sure you leave early in the morning (8am at the latest).
If you do not reach the half way point by noon you will not be allowed to continue on.

Eorimok Trail (4.7km):
A beautiful trail sheltered with trees and mountain vegetation

Yeongsil Trail (3.7km):
It offers great views but is very exposed. Is advised not to climb on a windy day.

Donnaeko Trail:
It is a gorgeous riverbed trail and has a clear (and cold) swimming hole.

Gwaneumsa Temple
It is located on Halla Mountain.
It is the oldest Buddhist temple on the island.

Yakcheon-sa Temple
It is located on the southern side of the island. The beautiful temple grounds are surrounded by a three story temple that features fantastic murals of Buddhist lore.

Peace Museum
It is located on the western side of the island.

The museum is a tribute to the hardship suffered by the Jeju people under the 35 years of Japanese rule.

It features restored tunnels under and through Gamma Oreum, and hiking trails to the top of the Oreum.

A video about the history of the site is available in English, with testimonials from Jeju men who were forced to dig the tunnels under Japanese occupation.

It is a moving historical site.

Haenyeo Museum
It is located in Sehwa (eastern side of Jeju Do). Haenyeo are women divers of Jeju Do. They dive deep in the ocean without any underwater breathing equipment to gather shellfish and seaweed. It is a very interesting museum with English explanations of all exhibits.
Loveland

Loveland is located just north of Shin Jeju and opens from nine to midnight.
It is a sex theme park full of saucy ridiculousness.
Please take your camera and a group of friends ready to be silly.
Jungmun Beach

Are you looking for a unique experience to celebrate the New Year? If so, how about considering a swim in the winter sea when temperatures hover around freezing? This beach hosts the Seogwipo Winter Penguin Festival in January.
