On Jeju Island, the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office of Education (Jeju POE) is responsible for all the schools in Jeju - 110 pre-schools, 106 elementary schools, 42 middle schools, 30 high schools and 3 special schools. We have two regional education offices - one is located in Jeju Si in Gu Jeju, and another in Seogwipo Si. We also have 7 subsidiary organizations including the Jeju Foreign Language Learning Center.
Jeju Education Objectives
We want to foster creativity as a resource for our society of the future. The Jeju POE focuses on the following basic principles of education:
1.Developing superior learning ability in Jeju students
2.Strengthening Reading & Essay Writing Education
3.Improving Foreign Language Education
4.Making schools that students enjoy and that parents trust
Operating Jeju Self-Governing Schools
Since Jeju was designated ”®Jeju Free International City' in 2006, the Jeju POE has gradually been designating and operating 22 schools as ”®Jeju Self-Governing Schools (Autonomous Schools) to create an effective and competitive school model. These schools have been developing autonomous curricula and, except for Korean Language, Social Studies, and Ethics, they can use textbooks that haven't been issued by the POE.
Improving Foreign Language Education
The purpose of education in Jeju POE is to train our students to become global citizens.
English education begins in our elementary school classrooms with our 1st and 2nd graders. They have been exposed to English through hands-on activities since 2007. We are proud to have placed native English teachers in all elementary, middle and high schools in Jeju to improve English proficiency. The Jeju POE has included English education as one of its four most important tasks and has invested a lot of money to make this a reality. We currently have 163 foreign language teachers working at each of our 178 schools and 2 special schools to promote foreign language education.
Foreign Culture Learning Center to Open in May
A new Foreign Culture Learning Center will be established in Shin Jeju and is expected to take a leading role in introducing foreign culture to Jeju. It will open this coming May in the Jeju High School. The Learning Center is part of a regional project to build an infrastructure for foreign language education in the Jeju Free International City.
The center will serve students and residents in New Jeju city and Aewol. It will be outfitted with a self-learning center, an English library, foreign language labs, a multi-media center, an interactive learning center and video rooms. Educational programs will be offered free to students and local residents. The Jeju POE is planning to hire 6 new native foreign language teachers including Japanese and Chinese in April. The Jeju POE currently has 1 Foreign Language Learning Center in Jeju Si (Gu Jeju) and 3 Foreign Culture Learning Centers in rural areas.
International Schools in Global Education City
After tendering for a corporation to manage the Jeju International School, the POE has finally selected one of the foundations as the preferred bidder among the candidates. Since then, the POE has been involved in negotiations focusing on matters of school operation, tuition, core curriculum, student quota, and foundation systems. The international school will open in 2011 on a site area of about 39,212§³.
Training Program for GETs (Guest English teachers)
All Guest English Teachers in Jeju currently attend a training program which is hosted by the EBS Broadcasting Company. This program helps them learn about Korean culture, classroom fundamentals and co-teaching methodologies. We are hoping that this program will improve their teaching skills and professionalism in elementary and secondary schools. This Jeju POE training is provided free of charge.
Another training program will take place on April 16th (Friday) at the Oriental Hotel. This training program is for newcomers and their Korean English co-teachers. It will focus on improving co-teaching strategies and better understanding Korean co-teachers.
